Particular foodstuffs and Food supplements

The Legislation concerning particular foodstuffs and food supplements is composed of a number of Community and National rules defining and governing a range of products that, besides meeting the General Food Law, should also refer to more specific rules, by virtue of some characteristics which distinguish them from common foods.

This category includes:

• Foods for infants and young children

• Dietetic products for special medical purposes

• Gluten-free foodstuffs

• Low sodium/sodium-free products

• Products for sports people

• Various dietetic products

• Foods added with vitamins and minerals or other substances

• Novel food

• Food supplements

Each one of these products refers to a specific rule, which is in some cases harmonized at European level or peculiar to a certain country, governing product composition, labelling, claims and quality requirements.

The Ministry of Health performs a surveillance activity and requires the notification of these products prior to their marketing in the Italian territory.

In addition, for some categories, the production may take place only within plants authorized by the Ministry of Health.
